Things to consider when homeschooling a college-bound student:

Early or dual enrollment: Many colleges across the country will accept early or dual enrollment for homeschooled high school students; this gives students an opportunity to begin college-level work prior to graduating high school, which makes them more attractive, as it shows concrete evidence of their ability to successfully complete college-level work.  Some colleges will offer transferable credit for a class, while others will only allow class audits with a “pass/fail” status.  Either experience can be very valuable to your student and will provide concrete evidence of achievement.  HoneyFern will help coordinate this enrollment, including locating and contacting schools in your area and assisting your student in course selection.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities: Volunteer and internship opportunities for homeschooled students are an integral part of the college application process.  HoneyFern can help identify potential areas of interest and locate and coordinate opportunities.  Many students find their passions and focus by volunteering, and they are able to do it when others are in school, adding to their attractiveness to four-year colleges.  Internships are an essential part of a homeschooler's educational journey and well worth the time and effort!

Portfolio Design and Transcript Assistance: Because homeschooled students have a wide variety of experiences prior to applying for college, it is imperative that they maintain a portfolio to demonstrate their traditional and not-so-traditional skills.  Portfolios are a great way to showcase achievement; students can create a photo journal of their volunteering, include essays and other pieces of writing, highlight key areas of development with regard to math and science projects and also include evaluations from online classes or other traditional academic settings.  HoneyFern can create a transcript of grades and evaluations that combines all of your student’s work.  Because of the nature of homeschooling and its unusual path to college, homeschool college counseling should start as early as 8th grade. Whether it is helping you build a portfolio from scratch or evaluating your existing work, contact us for help!

HoneyFern also offers *SAT tutoring in the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the SAT, as well as online AP classes in multiple subjects.
